month CAD
SPAGHETTI
provides market intelligence from our database of nearly 20,000
UK CAD/CAM user sites. This database contains in-depth information
for each record covering some 150 separate data items.
This month,
we have analysed data from 13,000 sites to look at hardware platforms
and operating systems used to support CAD/CAM activity.

Hardware
Platforms
The chart
below illustrates the type of hardware platform used according
to business activity. Amid the domination of PCs, we see that
one in five architects are using Apple Macs, and Mechanical and
Electronic Engineering sites have the highest proportion of workstation
use (14%).

Operating
Systems
The chart
below illustrates the operating systems used according to business
activity.

|
|
While DOS
and Windows 3.1 cling on, Windows 95 still appears to have plenty
of life left in it. Use of Windows 98 is significantly higher
in architecture and civil engineering than in other industries.
The electronic and electrical sectors have the most even split
between users of Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. Windows
NT is edging ahead as the most used system among mechanical/process
engineering sites.
