| Each month CAD
SPAGHETTI
will provide market intelligence from our database of nearly
20,000 UK CAD/CAM user sites. This month, we compare data
gathered from the Electronic Engineering sector between
1997 and 2000 on operating systems,
hardware platforms and number of CAD seats.
Operating
Systems
In 1997 Windows 95 was the
preferred operating system (OS) in the sector, used by 43% of
sites. DOS and Windows 3.1 were used by around a third of
sites, with one in five using UNIX.
1998 saw the use of Windows 95
and Windows NT both increase by over 20%. The use of UNIX
declined slightly to 17%, while 10% of sites had installed Windows
98 shortly after its launch that year. |
The
UK CAD/CAM User Site Database contains in-depth information
for each record covering some 150 separate data items. The
data is updated twice a year by our specialist IT researchers.
The scope for analysis is huge, but here is a small selection
of statistics comparing data between 1997 and 2000.
The base size taken for this analysis was in excess of 600
sites in the Electronic Engineering sector for each year looked
at.

|
By
2000, DOS and Windows 3.1 had almost disappeared, while nearly a
third of companies had taken up Windows 98.
Windows NT was the most popular operating system, operating in
almost half of sites. The use
of UNIX increased to 22% of sites.

Hardware
Platforms
PCs
were used by 92% of sites as their hardware
platform for Electronic Engineering by 2000.
Around one in five sites used workstations in the three years
analysed.
Other
hardware platforms (Mainframes, Applemac and Mini Computers) were used by
around 1% of sites.
Number
of CAD seats per site
The
most common number of CAD seats per site in the Electronic Engineering
sector is between 2 and 5. While the proportion of sites with one seat or between 2 to 5
seats fluctuated between 1997 to 2000, there was a general upward trend in
the proportion of sites with more than 6 seats.
